DFW-Auto-Service-Car-Care-National-Tire-Safety-Week-Tips-2It’s National Tire Safety Week, and this week, auto shops everywhere are getting the word out on tire safety. And, of course, you know that here, at City Garage, our experts are dedicated to doing the same and keeping you safe year round.

So, when it comes to safety, here’s the top 4 on our checklist:

  • Pressure: Maintaining the proper amount of pressure in your tires is important, especially in the summer. When tires get overinflated, they bulge out and rub the road unevenly. But when they’re underinflated, the effects are immediate and the potential impact on your overall safety is much greater. Underinflation puts you at risk for tire failure, irregular wear, loss of control and accidents. And just because your tire isn’t flat, it doesn’t mean it hasn’t lost plenty of pressure – tires can actually lose half their pressure and still not be flat. So, it’s a good idea to check your pressure at least once every month. You can find your car’s specified levels listed somewhere within your door post, glove compartment or fuel door. Or you can always bring your car into your local City Garage; our experts are here to help and we’ll gladly gauge your pressure levels.
  • Alignment: Sometimes, when you hit a curb or pothole, your wheels get thrown out of alignment. And when that happens, your tires are susceptible to rapid and uneven wear and tear. If your steering wheel has been shaking or your car seems to be “pulling” towards one side, chances are your alignment is off. So, when you come in, we’ll make sure your tires are balanced and aligned.
  • Rotation: If you haven’t rotated your tires in awhile, you may have noticed uneven wear on your tread. Our experts recommend rotating your tires every 5,000 miles, but check your owner’s manual for your car’s recommended rotation pattern.
  • Tread: Your tread plays a critical role in keeping a good grip on the road, especially on wet, rainy days. If your tread starts looking smooth, or you start noticing bald spots, it’s important to bring your car in immediately. And if you’re not sure if it’s getting too low, here’s a simple test to check: Place a penny inside your tread groove. If you can see part of Lincoln’s head, your tires have enough tread. But if his whole head is showing, your tread is worn down to under 2/32 of an inch and not safe, especially on slick streets.
