Overview of an Auto A/C Unit

When driving on a hot summer afternoon, there’s nothing more refreshing and comforting than a good auto air conditioner. Hot weather can make a car feel like an oven, so auto ac is important for a comfortable, stress-free ride. Cooling the occupants of a vehicle in hot weather is the main purpose of an automobile air conditioning system.

For historical background, air conditioning for cars was first installed in the 1930’s. Beginning in 1939, the Packard Motor Car Company offered an air conditioning unit in its cars, being the first to do so. As the late 20th century came around, automobile air-conditioning came into wide use. The refrigeration cycle is the primary operating principle for auto air conditioner. With this cycle, heat is transported from the passenger’s compartment to the environment. A prime example of this kind of system is a refrigerator. Refrigerators transport the heat out of the interior and into the room that serves as its environment.

A deeper look into how the car’s A/C works is as follows:

  • Circulating refrigerant vapor is enters the compressor within the engine bay and is compressed to a higher pressure, which leads to a higher temperature as well.
  • The hot, compressed vapor is now at a pressure and temperature in which it can be condensed. It is routed through a condenser, which is usually found in front of the automobile’s radiator.
  • The refrigerant is cooled and rejects heat from the system and the heat is carried away by air.

Next, the liquid refrigerant is routed through an expansion valve where its temperature is lowered and then it is routed through the evaporator located in the passenger compartment. The air blows from here and is cooled. You can contact a company like City Garage DFW to handle anything related to automobile air-conditioning.
