Cars have their own way of telling you when it’s time for a tune-up. The key is knowing the signs.

So, what signs should you be looking out for? Here are the top 7 signs your car is signaling that it’s time for a tune-up:

Sign #1: Hard Starting

Of all the problems you may come across, a hard starting engine is the most common. Usually, unperformed, past-due manufacturer’s maintenance services are to blame. If your starter still cranks the engine, it’s probably not your electrical system, which means your starting sensor or the choke mechanism could be the cause. Usually though, an electronic component or the computer controlling your ignition system is at fault for any starting failure. In any case, this is clear sign that you should bring your car in for servicing.

Sign #2: Knocking or Pinging

A knocking or pinging sound coming from your engine could be caused by carbon build up in the combustion chambers, bad fuel or faulty fuel injectors. Although it could be caused by a tankful of gas, this is typically a good indicator that your car could use a tune-up.

Sign #3: Sputtering or Stalling

Sputtering or stalling as you’re accelerating or going uphill is a sure sign that your car needs to be tuned. Generally, this is due to a buildup of dirt or grime on a component of your emissions system and means that it’s time to see our experts.

Sign #4: Decreasing Gas Mileage

Bad gas mileage, especially when you’ve been changing your oil regularly, could be due to a much needed tune-up. Poor gas mileage could be due to several other issues, so be sure to have your oilbrakes and tires checked to rule out any other possibilities as well.

Sign #5: Dieseling

Dieseling, also known as “after-run,” could be caused by a variety of factors ranging from inferior gas to excessive idling speeds to carbon in your combustion chamber. When you hear your engine “chugging” or “coughing” several seconds or more after you’ve turned your ignition off, it’s probably a sign that it’s time for a tune-up.

Sign #6: Smelling

The smell of rotten eggs coming from your catalytic converter could be a result of your catalytic converter malfunctioning or just sign number six that your engine could use a tune-up.

Sign #7: Running Rough

A rough running engine while idling, accelerating or driving at any speed is typically due to an internal engine condition, a fuel system malfunction or an ignition system issue. And it’s also another sign that you should stop in and see our experts for diagnostic and tune-up services.
